Laundry Room – Tidy & Organized
Laundry Room – Tidy & Organized – Besides the foyer, the laundry room is probably the most catch-all area of the home. Usually the laundry room is off of the garage where we enter our home and just let everything drop right there. STOP!! If you don’t have a place to put the item, don’t leave it there. Allow the item to continue its journey to its proper place. Otherwise the clutter will overwhelm you again!
Storage
Since most laundry rooms are small, you will have to think of vertically adding storage to the room. Create storage above the washer, dryer, and other appliances or countertop. Add hooks if this is the place that you want the backpacks, coats, and hats to live. Add a basket for shoes.
Find hidden storage under countertops if available, the space between the washer, dryer or refrigerator if you have one in your laundry room. This is where you might be able to fit a skinny shelf or basket to help get the clutter under control.
Organize
Group together items that are related to each other to give the room a less cluttered look. If you have open shelving consider putting baskets up where things like laundry detergent, softener, dryer sheets, etc. can be stored. Be sure and label the baskets if they are above your eye level to know what is in each one and make it easy to access.
Keep a jar or bowl nearby to put loose change. In my house, the person that does the majority of laundry gets to lay claim to any change that is forgotten in pockets. You can call it your laundry tip jar. 🙂
Not sure this really needs to be said, but move the trash out of the laundry room as soon as possible, don’t keep empty containers of laundry detergent. I have a small trash can specifically for this and lint from the dryer.
I know, I’m not your mother, but really you need to go ahead and fold the clothes and get them out of the laundry room as soon as possible when they have finished drying. As the family members come into the utility room, why not hand them an armload of their laundry to take to their room at that time?
