It’s 2016 – Time to Declutter
It’s 2016 – Time to get your House in Order!
The company has left, the tree is standing sadly in the corner with no presents and the Ball has dropped! It’s time to get your house in order.
Take a weekend and go ahead and put that Christmas tree back in the attic. While you are at it, bring in a box and put all the decorations you are tired of, that are broken, or just their time to go. You can take these to the nearest charity or in a special place to finally have that garage sale you have been thinking about.
Now it is time to get started on the next task: Decluttering the entire House! This is not something that has to be done in a weekend or a month. Find a schedule online or make yourself a calendar and set up a timeline to hit everything in the house over the next year.
A few little suggestions for you while you are accomplishing your list:
Have several boxes as you work each area in the house: one for moving items, one for giveaways, and one for moving it to the correct area of the home.
Work for an hour or two and then take a break; don’t burn out to the point that you never go back to the task.
Get your family involved such as having the children go through their toys with the three boxes above. Remember a reward will help at this point, maybe one new toy for every 10 given away or a trip to the park, etc. Oh, and don’t forget to reward yourself for all the hard work as well.
Is someone in your house super OCD? That might be the person to work on the files and get them in order and or organize the pantry.
It’s OK to purge those paper files of anything over 7 years. If it worries you to get rid of them or you want to go paperless, then invest in a scanner.
You might want to wait until after you have organized one area before you go buy bins, boxes or other organizing tools so that you buy the right size and the right amount. Don’t forget to measure before you buy!
Think about labeling the bins and boxes you have bought for your organization to help you remember what is inside.
Can’t decide to get rid of something hanging in your closet, turn the hangar around and if you haven’t put it on by the end of 2016, it goes out with the year! Want to move that clothing out faster? Try the Three “F”s. Fit, Flatter & Feel Good; then keep it, and if nope, then move it out!
See you next week with more in-depth ideas of how to organize room by room.
